I first saw work by Ben Shahn (1898-1969) on the cover of Steinbeck's Grapes of wrath.
It was the painting 'Years of dust' above right, and it made a huge impression on me.
In fact, it was hard to choose this time, and I have included more works than usual, but I couldn't choose! He was great as a colorist, but his graphic work was also beautiful.
Shahn was an American artist of Jewish-Lithuanian parents. His social-realistic work is often described as activist.
