One of the absolute greatest illustrators for me is the Dutch illustrator Max Velthuijs (1923-2005)
His characters are endearing, and his technique fabulous.
Nowadays to my horror you see books made after his death, with stills from an animation series that was on tv.
You can immediately spot the difference: the lines are too hard, too smooth, and plain wrong.
In a few weeks it will be time for the anual children's book fair in Bologna.
I always think back then to the first time we went there. We stayed in a hotel with our (and his) then publisher Leopold, and I was completely star struck to find Max Velthuijs at the breakfast table.
