I don't know how this is possible, but untill recently the work of the American writer and -first and foremost- illustrator Edward Gorey (1925-2000) had escaped my attention!
I can't remember ever having seen his books, but will look out for them now.
Not only are his illustration beautifully sparse, with not a detail too many, they are also extremely funny, often with a pitchblack undertone.
Like a cross between Aubrey beardsley and Maurice Sendak.
